The Musician

“I’m not sure about this,” Heather said.

“What?” asked Ryan. “Peters tracked down the woman who played an instrument with Gary Ozmore, and we should talk to her.”

Heather frowned. She and Ryan were talking near the home of Tory Timbre. Peters and Amy were a few steps ahead of them, on their way to the door.

“I know we should,” Heather agreed. “But we should also talk to the mayor’s sister. It feels like we’re avoiding that lead because her being the killer would be a headache.”

“It would be a headache,” Ryan agreed. “But whoever is guilty is going to be tried. I promise you that. It doesn’t matter who it is.”

She nodded. She knew that her husband was honorable and sought to find justice. She didn’t doubt that.

“But we are talking to Tory Timbre first because we’re hoping that Claudia Mitchem isn’t involved?”

Ryan acquiesced to that. “It would be nice if we didn’t have to drag the mayor’s sister into things when he’s already upset about Gary Ozmore dying. But we will talk to her.”

“It is possible she’s a witness and not a suspect,” Heather said to try and cheer him up at the prospect of the interview.

“Will you lovebirds cut it out and come here?” Amy called.

They hurried to catch up with the other investigators and knocked on the door. A young woman with a red face opened it. She appeared to have been crying.

“Hello?”

“Miss Timbre, I’m Detective Shepherd, and this is my partner Detective Peters. Accompanying us are two private investigators who have assisted us on many cases: Heather Shepherd and Amy Givens. Do you mind if we ask you some questions?”

“Is this about Gary?”

“That’s right, miss,” said Peters.

“I can’t believe he’s dead,” she said. “And because of the fireworks. He loved them so much. Doing displays for the community was one of his favorite things to do. That and playing music for everyone. I’m just heartbroken that he’s gone.”

“You knew him well?” asked Ryan.

Tory nodded. “I’ve been playing in his band for a few years now. I play the flute. It was nice to be needed musically. He had a small band of instruments that would play at outdoor events. And he always chose great music for us. The crowd loved it. our songs would line up with the fireworks displays.”

“How many people are in the band?” asked Heather.

“It does vary a little bit,” said Tory, thinking about it. “Sometimes he used more brass instruments than others. Usually, it was around six people. Sebastian and I were regulars in his band. Some other players were changed depending on the event and how big he wanted it to be.”

“Who is Sebastian?” asked Amy.

“Sebastian Smith,” Tory said. “He plays the drums.”

“Were there any issues between band members?” Ryan asked.

Tory shook her head. “We all got along great. We were just playing to make people happy while they watched fireworks. What drama could there be there?”

“Do you know anyone who could have wanted to hurt Gary Ozmore?” asked Peters.

“No,” Tory said, tearing up again.
